George began his career at Union Carbide doing theoretical research in ionic liquids and electrolytes. His interest in these studies led to a transfer to the Battery Products Division (now Energizer Batteries) and the study of primary batteries. His work on lithium batteries resulted in the discovery of many of the first liquid cathode batteries including lithium-thionyl chloride cells and lithium-sulfuryl chloride cells. Work on transition metal sufides as cathodes led to the lithium-iron pyrite battery which is still a major product of Energizer Battery. Dr. Blomgren retired from Energizer as Senior Technology Fellow, the highest technical position. Then followed a position of Chief Scientist for Imara Battery Co. developing early high rate lithium ion batteries for power tools. He has won numerous awards for his battery work from the Electrochemical Society and the International Battery Materials Association.
